Maw Haws at Omanuka

Match Report – Accelerate Automotive Bloomfield P3 vs Maw Haws

Saturday 10th of January 2026 at Omanuka Oval

Our first game back after Christmas was played at fortress Omanuka, where no Bloomfield side has lost a club match since the ground began hosting games last season. While Bloomfield hasn’t quite been rolling teams the way we’re used to this year, Maw Haws were never going to be pushovers.

Rain the previous afternoon, just before the covers went on, suggested the wicket might offer a touch more for the bowlers than it did at club day the week prior. Trout won the toss and didn’t hesitate in sending Maw Haws in.

Overcast skies and a stiff breeze slowed the drying process and helped the bowlers early. The pitch offered good bounce and seam movement, with the occasional ball climbing awkwardly off a length. Gaz opened up nicely, hitting good areas consistently. Baby Trout was a touch short early, conceding a couple of runs, but quickly found his rhythm and struck when Nathan Smith edged one to a sharp catch in the gully.

Nick Rowton and Greg Lough dug in to steady things for Maw Haws, negotiating the trickiest batting conditions and briefly putting Bloomfield under pressure. Just as the partnership looked to be gaining control, Rowton was caught by Pilch and the momentum shifted again.

At drinks, with Maw Haws 71 for 2, Bloomfield were well placed to keep the total down if they could strike early after the break. Instead, another 58 runs were added before Gaz broke through, bowling Carl Trask for 24. From there, Maw Haws lifted the tempo as Ryan Harrison and Phil King joined Greg Lough and took the attack on.

Maw Haws eventually closed their innings on 222 for 6, with Greg Lough unlucky to fall just short of a deserved century, caught in the final over for 97. Pilch was the standout with the ball, finishing with 2 for 14 from 6 overs, although his spell was slightly undermined by an ongoing inability to count to eight.

Geoffery’s friend, Reebok Nano’s negative attitude, accompanied him out onto a pitch that had incidentally already seen plenty of dark clouds over the previous 24 hours. Unfortunately for Nano, his day never lifted, guiding one to gully for 2. The silver lining was that everyone else got to bat on a surface that had flattened out beautifully.

Jase came in at his new number three position and wasted no time getting to work. “New Year, New Jase” even produced what may have been his first defensive shot of the season. After facing 46 balls, he departed for a fluent 56, caught on the boundary by Dwayne O’Leary.

Kurtis joined Tyler, who had been quietly rotating the strike and doing his best to look harmless. By the time Maw Haws realised he was anything but, Tyler was bowled for a well-earned 54. Kurtis, who clearly enjoys batting at Omanuka and has the tattoo to prove it, began finding the rope regularly while the middle order struggled around him.

Chookoo, Grumpy, and Captain Trout all fell for single figures, briefly giving Maw Haws a sniff of victory. However, Pilch held his nerve and, alongside more clean hitting from Kurtis, guided Bloomfield home three balls into the final over.

Next week we take on Titans, but with roughly a third of the club on smoko, we’ll have plenty of work to do.
